Coming Home

He spends at least two hours with Patterson, first just working through some clues - reluctantly, because she should be resting - and then just trying to convince her to actually rest. He finally leaves when she's given another dose of pain medicine and falls asleep, so he knows she's okay for now.

The first person on his mind when he leaves the hospital is Jane, and he doesn't even text her first, he just drives over there. It's almost midnight, so he chides himself, thinking she's probably asleep. But then he knocks anyway. Selfish of him, maybe, but he can't help it.

"Jane, it's me," he speaks softly, not wanting to alarm her.
